Box Score WISE - - Visiting Wheeling Jesuit University limited UVa-Wise to 1-12 shooting in the first quarter and raced out to a 26-4 lead en route to a 72-44 women's basketball win at the Prior Center Thursday. The loss snapped the Cavaliers 10-game home winning streak and allowed the Cardinals to remain in sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference.
Wheeling Jesuit (19-4, 14-3 MEC) put together a 23-1 run to close the opening quarter to take its big lead. Monica Burns scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the period while Chenelle Moore netted eight of her 12 points in the quarter.
UVa-Wise (17-8, 12-5 MEC) never recovered from the slow start as the hosts never got the game closer than 17 points.
The Cardinals finished the game 21-24 from the free throw line and won the battle of the boards 45-40.
The Cavaliers failed to place any players in double-figure scoring for the first time this season. Alle Moore and Kayla Mullins came off the bench to lead the team with eight points each.
UVa-Wise finished the game making just 25.8 percent of its shot attempts.
The Cavs will be back in action Saturday when the team entertains West Liberty University for Basketball Homecoming 2017. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from the Prior Center.
