Lacrosse Blows by Lees-McRae

WISE - - Sophomore McKayla Grasham scored five goals while Hannah Marshall added two goals and three assists as UVa-Wise improved to 2-0 with a 17-0 victory over Lees-McRae at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday.

UVa-Wise (2-0) put the game away early as Grasham, Jesse French, Rachel Cole, Ashley Wells and Marshall all scored in the opening 14 minutes of the game to take a 5-0 lead.

Lees-McRae (0-2) would be unable to generate any offense as the visitors managed just three shots on goal for the entire game.

The strong defensive effort for the Cavaliers paid dividends as Kristin Gobbi added a pair of goals while Annie Hanson and Grasham all scored before the first half horn to send the hosts to intermission with a 9-0 advantage.

Sophomore Sydney Steinberg scored the Cavs opening goal of the second half when she scored off a Marshall assist to put a running clock into effect at the 27:54 mark. Back-to-back goals by Grasham pushed the lead to 12-0 and the route was on as the program claimed its second shutout victory all-time.

UVa-Wise dominated every facet of the game as Meghan Dennehy's team won the groundball battle 27-13, converted 13 of 17 clear attempts compared to 11 of 23 successful attempts for Lees-McRae and winning the shots on goal battle 22-3.

Cole and Marshall each added six groundballs for the Cavs while Marshall added seven caused turnovers and Cole picked up four draw controls.

UVa-Wise will return to action on March 3 when the team travels to face North Greenville University.
