SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – UVa-Wise men's basketball continues its three-game road trip Saturday afternoon with its second game in the Buckeye State this week. The Cavaliers tip off against Urbana University at 4 p.m.
Storylines – at Urbana University
The Cavaliers take on the Blue Knights for the second time this year after suffering a 67-65 setback in the two teams' first meeting inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center back on Jan. 8. In that contest, UVa-Wise was defeated in the final seconds of the contest after Urbana's Carlas Jackson hit a jumper from the baseline with 3.9 seconds left to give the visiting Blue Knights the Mountain East Conference road victory. The low-scoring game featured 11 ties and seven different lead changes as the Cavs tied the score one final time with 17 seconds to go when junior guard
DeMarcus Edwards (Washington, D.C.) drained a corner 3-pointer.
Currently, UVa-Wise, Urbana and Concord University are in a three-way tie for ninth place in the MEC regular season standings. The three teams all own a 5-14 league record and are competing for seeding in the upcoming MEC Tournament. One team will most likely not make the postseason tournament of those three as the conference tournament only takes the top 10 teams in the regular season league standings.
Most recently, the Blue Knights were defeated 98-91 at home by Concord Thursday night and have lost three consecutive games, including five of their last six and nine of their last 11. The lone wins for Urbana in its last 11 games were a 96-85 road win at Glenville State College on Jan. 26 and a 96-77 home win over West Virginia State on Feb. 4.
The Blue Knights own a 4-3 lead in the series with the two teams splitting last season's games, the visiting team winning both contests.
Led by third-year head coach Rob Summers, Urbana features four different players averaging double-figure scoring. Sophomore power forward Jahmere Howze (16.6 PPG), freshman guard DeQuan Abrom (15 PPG), junior guard Carlas Jackson (14.5 PPG) and junior forward Charles Sweatt-Washington (10.4 PPG) are all averaging over 10 points per contest.
