Cavalier Men Defeat Glenville, 82-65

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise was able to bounce back and earn another conference road victory against the Pioneers of Glenville State, 82-65, on Saturday night. The Cavaliers now improve to 4-2 in league play and 5-6 overall. Sophomore point guard Michal Seals had a phenomenal night, registering a double-double with 10 assists and 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and going 3-for-6 from downtown.

The Cavaliers managed to improve their field goal percentage on Saturday as the team went 33-for-67 (49.3 percent) from the field while the Pioneers (0-9, 0-6 MEC) shot 22-for-60 (36.7 percent). UVa-Wise also capitalized on shots from the foul line, hitting 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) free throws on the night.

Neither team shot particularly well from beyond the arc, with the Cavaliers connecting on just 9-of-25 (36 percent) from downtown while Glenville State hit just 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) shots from three-point range.

UVa-Wise grabbed a nine-point lead to start the game after Seals knocked down a three-pointer, giving the Cavaliers an 11-2 advantage over the Pioneers. The Pioneers would hustle to get back in the game, taking their largest lead of the night, 20-15, over the Cavs with 11:49 on the clock.

A shot from downtown by senior guard DeMarcus Edwards would allow the Cavaliers to take the lead back, going up just one point over the Pioneers for a 25-24 advantage at the 8:25 mark. The Cavs would not relinquish the lead again as UVa-Wise entered into halftime up 45-35 behind a buzzer-beating layup by junior guard Rahji Langford.

A corner three by redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus would get the second half started as the Cavaliers took a 48-35 lead. UVa-Wise maintained a double-digit advantage over the Pioneers for the remainder of the contest, winning its fourth consecutive conference road matchup, 82-65.

UVa-Wise finished with an incredible 16 assists on the night and only eight turnovers. The Pioneers were battered by an aggressive defense that led to 11 steals for the Cavaliers and 15 turnovers for Glenville State.

Glenville was assisted by its bench players who aided the team with 35 points while the Cavaliers had just 12 points off the bench. UVa-Wise took advantage of its strong defensive performance recording 21 points off of turnovers by the Pioneers.

Taiwo Badmus led all players with 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting and added eight rebounds. Seals went 6-for-10 from the floor and posted six rebounds and four steals while sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea went 5-for-7 from the field with 13 points alongside nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Tajh Eason put up 10 points and four rebounds while junior guard Rahji Langford had nine points and five rebounds in the win.

Freshman forward Elisha Mayberry led the Pioneers in scoring with 19 points alongside six rebounds and one steal. Sophomore guard Darhius Nunn and junior guard Theo Brown both recorded 13 points apiece while sophomore guard Brooks Ely led Glenville in rebounding with nine boards on the night and finished with seven points in the loss.

The Cavaliers will now entire into a three week break from games, returning to action on Dec. 30 for a non-conference matchup against Milligan College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
