SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - - UVa-Wise handled Notre Dame College on Monday night, 102-101, in a double-overtime thriller. The Cavs improve to 2-0 in league play, 2-3 overall, while the Falcons received their first conference upset and dropped to 1-1 in conference play and 2-3 overall.
Sophomore guard Chance Sheffey scored first for the Cavaliers, hitting two free throws after being fouled by Notre Dame's senior forward Will Vorhees. A three pointer by the Falcons' Drew Scarberry would give Notre Dame the lead,11-7, with just under 17 minutes to play.
Behind a layup and a three pointer by senior forward Taiwo Badmus, UVa-Wise took its first lead of the night, 12-11. After falling behind by a point, another Badmus three gave the Cavaliers a two point advantage, 15-13, with 13:40 on the clock.
With 9:37 left in the first half, senior guard DeMarcus Edwards banked a three off of an assist by freshman point guard Gianni Street to take the lead once again, 24-23.
Back-to-back jumpers by sophomore point guard Michal Seals gave the Cavaliers a four point lead, 31-27. After falling behind to the Falcons again, sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea put up a three to take a 36-35 advantage for the Cavs with 4:21 left in the half.
Grabbing the rebound after a missed shot by Vorhees, freshman forward Jordan Pointer took the ball down the court for an easy layup to extend the Cavs advantage, 38-35 with just under four minutes on the clock. The game would tie again at 42-42 behind a three by Notre Dame's freshman guard Halil Parks. Badmus would respond hitting one more from downtown to take a 45-42 advantage going into halftime.
The Falcons outscored the Cavs in the paint, 18-14, in the first half. Badmus led all scorers with 14 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from downtown. The Cavs shot 17-for-37 (45.9 percent) from the floor in the first half while also making 6-of-11 three-pointers. UVa-Wise defense held the Falcons to 17-of-43 shooting, hitting only 6-for-15 from beyond the arc.
Two free-throw shots by Badmus put the Cavs up by three, 47-44, to start the second half. A layup by Seals with a little under 17 minutes left to play in the second half put the Cavs ahead by six, 52-46. With 14:55 on the clock, sophomore guard Chance Sheffey forced a turnover by Notre Dame's senior forward Oliver Megins and handed the ball over to junior guard Rahji Langford who went in for an easy basket to take a 56-48 lead over the Falcons.
A dunk by Badmus at the 14:14 mark would give the Cavaliers their largest lead of the night, 62-48. Fouls and turnovers allowed the Falcons to get back in the game, cutting the Cavs lead to six points, 62-56. Made free throw shots and a layup by freshman guard Halil Parks got the Falcons within three with 9:50 left to go in the second half.
Senior guard Ricardo Hill Jr. provided bench support, hitting back-to-back threes to get the Cavs lead back up to six points, 82-76, with 4:02 left. The Falcons' Taylor banked a three to get Notre Dame within one point, 84-83. A made free throw by Seals would put the Cavs up by two, but Notre Dame's Vorhees would make a layup to tie the game up, 88-88, and send the two teams into the first overtime of the night.
UVa-Wise scored 28 points in the paint in the second half, 17 points coming from off the bench.
Notre Dame's Taylor would hit a three to start overtime and put the Falcons up 91-88. With 2:08 left, Seals would make a layup to put the Cavs only down by one point, 92-91. A Sheffey layup tied the game up at 93-93 with 1:15 in the first overtime.
A three by sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea gave the Cavs a 96-95 lead with only 20 seconds on the clock. After the Falcons' Parks made a free throw with two seconds left to tie the game at 96-96, Sheffey would throw up the ball in an attempt to seal the win, but it would fall short and send the teams into a second-overtime showdown.
Another three by Mosquera-Perea would get the second overtime started, with the Cavs taking a 99-96 lead at the 4:17 mark. Notre Dame's Vorhees would respond by hitting a jumper to put the Falcons within one point, 99-98. A final Mosquera-Perea three would ultimately seal the 102-101 win at the 2:06 mark in a thrilling double-overtime game.
Four players for the Cavaliers saw double-digit points, led by Seals who recorded 24 points, shooting 11-for-22 the field, and added eight rebounds and seven assists. Badmus shot 7-for-16 from the field with 22 points, hitting 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. UVa-Wise shot 38-for-86 from the floor, 52.2 percent from downtown, and grabbed 49 boards. The Cavs scored 46 points from inside the paint and were assisted with 25 points coming off the bench.
Notre Dame was led by Vorhees who had 25 points off of 9-for-22 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds. The Falcons' Taylor went 6-for-17, posting 20 points in the loss. Notre Dame shot just 34-for-48 (38.6 percent) from the field and tallied 16 turnovers in the loss.
Men's basketball will pause league play as the team takes on Berea College (Ky.) at home on Nov. 22. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
