WISE - - Men's basketball suffered an 88-65 loss to Carson-Newman University on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers (0-3) made just 18-of-57 (31.6 percent) shots, but managed to force 15 turnovers by a strong Eagles (3-0) squad.
Carson-Newman went on a 6-1 run to start the game following a jumper by Eagles' forward Josh Murray. A three-pointer by sophomore point guard Michal Seals put the Cavaliers within four points, 10-6, with 17:30 on the clock.
The Eagles would go on an 11-0 run to take a 21-6 advantage over the Cavs with 13:39 left in the half. Carson-Newman would continue to dominate the entire half, extending their lead to 20 points behind a three by junior guard Mason Bates with a little under four minutes to go. Sophomore guard Chance Sheffey cut the Eagles' lead, 35-21, after hitting a three with 3:25 left in the first half.
The Cavaliers would head into halftime down 42-23, posting only six points in the paint. UVa-Wise shot just 7-for-33 (21.2 percent) in the first half, hitting only 2-of-15 from beyond the arc. Sheffey led the Cavs with 11 points while Seals added five points and five rebounds along with three assists to close out the half.
Junior guard Mason Bates led the Eagles with eight points, followed by senior guard Charles Clark who recorded seven points along with five rebounds. Carson-Newman hit 16-of-31 (51.6 percent) shots from the field in the first half, making 7-of-9 free throws.
Carson-Newman continued its first half momentum into the second half, extending the lead to 24 points, 47-23, behind a three-pointer by Eagles' junior guard Grant Teichmann. With 15:21 on the clock, a jumper by senior forward Taiwo Badmus would cut the lead to 51-32. The Eagles' Clark would respond, going on a 5-0 run to put Carson-Newman up 56-32 with 14:40 left.
The Eagles would take their largest lead of the night, gaining a 78-45 advantage over the Cavs with 8:41 on the clock. Freshman point guard Gianni Street would score the final points for UVa-Wise with 1:30 left to play, 85-65. Carson-Newman would close out the game with a tip-in by junior forward Parker Role' as the Eagles earned a 88-65 victory over the Cavs.
Carson-Newman's Clark led his team in scoring with 20 points on the night, shooting 5-for-14 from the field. The Eagles shot 30-for-59 (50.8 percent) on the night with 36 points inside the paint.
Badmus led all scorers with 24 points off of 7-for-18 shooting, going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, and added seven rebounds for the Cavs. Sheffey posted 11 points and three rebounds while Seals accounted for nine points and six rebounds in the loss.
Men's basketball will travel to Urbana, Ohio to take on Urbana University in the Cavaliers first conference matchup of the season on Saturday, Nov. 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
