WISE - - Playing at home for the first time this season, UVa-Wise (1-2, 0-0 MEC) used a late fourth quarter surge to propel them to an 83-80 win over #24 Lincoln Memorial (1-2, 0-0 SAC). The Cavaliers win is the first career win for interim Head Coach Elise Clyburn.
Scoring would be at a premium in quarter one as the teams combined to score just 12 points in the first five and a half minutes of play. Junior Ashley Cullen (Mooresville, N.C.) would get the scoring started for the Cavs, hitting a layup 52 seconds in to the game. Cullen then canned a three off the assist from freshman Hanna Oliver (Woodbridge, Va.). Â From there, LMU would use a 14-10 run to close out quarter one.
The second quarter was a series of runs by UVa-Wise. Junior Alle Moore (Marietta, Ohio) would get the second quarter started with a jumper off the assist from junior Adalmaryz Rivera-Gomez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico). Bianca Lockamy (Greenville, N.C.) then would make a layup off an assist from Moore. The Cavaliers hit a scoring drought that would last nearly three minutes before two free throws from Nokomis Williams (Greensboro, N.C.) started a 15-10 run to send Clyburn's club to the half, down just five. During that 15 point outburst, seven of the points came from the charity stripe as the Railsplitters committed 15 first half fouls.
Coach Clyburn's team would shoot 69 percent from the line in the first half going 11-of-16. Lincoln Memorial shot 42 percent from the field in the half on their way to a 40-35 advantage.
The third quarter would be a quarter of back and forth action between the two teams. Baskets by Cullen and Lockamy and a free throw from Gomez would get the Cavaliers within two of the Railsplitters. A layup from Rachel Griffith pushed the lead back to four before Moore hit a layup to get the advantage back down to two.
Three free throws from Webb gave the Cavs their first lead of the game with 2:56 to go in the quarter. The teams went back and forth on the free throw line before junior Janice Ladson (Woodbridge, Va.) knocked down a jumper with 1:42 to go in the period. Karsen Sims would tip-in a shot to knot the game at 50 before Oliver hit her second three pointer of the game. Rachel Griffith made two free throws to pull LMU back within one before Webb hit a layup to give the Cavaliers a three point advantage heading into the fourth.
Freshman Judy Kaylynn Cummings (Clarksville, Tenn.) hit a three to get the final period rolling, giving UVa-Wise their largest lead of the game. The Railsplitters then went on a 6-0 run to knot the game back up at 60. The game would be tied up eight more times before a layup with 15 seconds to go from Cummings and two free throws from Webb with three seconds on the clock sealed the deal for the Cavs.
Webb would finish with her second double-double of the season as she scored 12 points to go along with a game high 10 rebounds. Lockamy would also finish with 12 points. The Cavaliers dished out 15 assist and would shoot 73 percent from the charity stripe in the win.
The win marked the first time UVa-Wise has defeated LMU since Dec. 4, 1978 when the Cavs upended the Railsplitters 93-70 in Greear Gymnasium.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Urbana to take on the Blue Knights in both teams Mountain East Conference opener. Tip-off from Urbana, Ohio set for 2 p.m.
