Men’s Basketball Routs Concord University 98-70 in Road Contest Thursday

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – Behind a career-high 42 points from redshirt junior forward Taiwo Badmus (London, England), UVa-Wise men's basketball picked up a 98-70 Mountain East Conference road win at Concord University Thursday night. The Cavaliers (4-13, 2-9 MEC) shot 54 percent (34-of-63) from the field and connected on 14-of-28 (50 percent) 3-point attempts, scoring 57 points in the second half to earn the victory over the homestanding Mountain Lions (5-12, 1-10 MEC).
 
UVa-Wise jumped out to a seven-point 11-4 lead four and a half minutes into the contest after a layin from redshirt sophomore Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil). The Cavs continued to lead for the next five minutes of play before Concord went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 23-20 with 9:41 to go in the half. A quick five-point spurt by UVa-Wise that included a 3-pointer from junior guard DeMarcus Edwards (Washington, D.C.) and another layin from Sousa gave the lead back to the Cavs with just under five minutes remaining in the half.
 
The Cavs outscored the Mountain Lions 12-4 over the next four minutes of play to build their largest lead of half at 41-33 with just over a minute left. Concord scored the final five points of the half as UVa-Wise took a 41-38 advantage into the break. The Mountain Lions' Michael Sanchez drilled a deep 3-pointer right before the halftime buzzer sounded.
 
UVa-Wise shot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) in the opening half as Badmus scored 23 first-half points on 8-of-10 shooting. Sousa posted 11 points for the Cavs in the first half. Sanchez had 11 points at the half for Concord as the Mountain Lions went 17-of-37 (45.9 percent) from the field, including 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
 
An emphatic dunk by Sousa capped a 12-0 UVa-Wise run to start the second half and the Cavs never looked back. UVa-Wise stretched out its run to 14-2 and took a commanding 15-point lead at 55-40 five minutes into the half. After keeping Concord scoreless for the opening four minutes of the second half, Edwards knocked down his second trey of the night to give the Cavs' their first 20-point lead at 68-48 with 10:44 to go. The Mountain Lions would go on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes of play to get within 13 before UVa-Wise responded with a 15-2 run of its own to take a 26-point, 83-57.
 
A 3-point basket by freshman guard Tajh Eason (Newport News, Va.) gave the Cavs their largest lead of the night at 32 points with a minute and a half remaining. Concord scored the final four points of the game in the last 90 seconds of play.
 
UVa-Wise outscored the Mountain Lions 57-32 in the second half on 18-of-35 (51.4 percent) shooting, going 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from deep. The Cavs held Concord to just 34.2 percent (13-of-38) shooting in the final 20 minutes, including 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from downtown. After struggling on the boards Monday at No. 6 Wheeling Jesuit University, UVa-Wise outrebounded the Mountain Lions 44-35 and 34-22 on the defensive end.
 
Badmus made a career-high 14 field goals and six 3-pointers in the game on the way to his seventh double-double of the season, grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. His 42 points the most of any Cav this season. Sousa finished with 21 points and six rebounds, while freshman point guard Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.) posted nine points. Freshman guard Chance Sheffey (Staunton, Va.) scored six points and dished out a team-high assists as Edwards' two 3-pointers gave him six points in 13 minutes of action off the bench.
 
Concord's Aaron Miller and Sanchez tallied 14 points and Cam Shannon scored 13 for the Mountain Lions. Stephen Thompson collected a team-high seven rebounds as Miller and Patrick Eugene earned six for Concord. The Mountain Lions' Tommy Bolte totaled nine points off the bench.
 
The Cavs now return to the David J. Prior Convocation Center for one game this Saturday, Jan. 21 against the University of Charleston. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
