Men’s Basketball Looks to Halt Four-Game Skid Thursday Night at Concord University

WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball wraps up a three-game Mountain East Conference road swing Thursday night at Concord University, tipoff from Athens, West Virginia, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Storylines – at Concord University
The Cavaliers face a Mountain Lions squad in a matchup of two teams that are at the bottom of the league standings. UVa-Wise and Concord sit in 12th and 11th place, each with a 1-9 conference record. The Mountain Lions are 5-11 overall on the season with their lone conference win coming at home against West Virginia State (92-82) back on Nov. 19.

Most recently, Concord went 0-2 on its trip to Wheeling Jesuit University and West Liberty University. Much like the Cavs' game against the sixth-ranked Cardinals, the Mountain Lions were edged 83-80 at No. 6 Wheeling Jesuit this past Saturday before suffering a 125-73 loss at No. 4 West Liberty University on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday.

Led by first-year head coach Todd May, who served as an assistant the last four seasons under former head coach Kent McBride, Concord features three different players averaging double-figure scoring. Senior guard Aaron Miller's 18.3 points per game are a team best, while senior forward Stephen Thompson (12.7 ppg) and senior guard Michael Sanchez (11.3 ppg) are also averaging more than 10 points per contest. Thompson leads the Mountain Lions on the glass with 6.1 rebounds per game as Sanchez's 4.3 assists per game are tops among his teammates.

Concord was picked to finish sixth in the MEC along with Shepherd University according to the preseason poll as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Last season the Mountain Lions captured the MEC Tournament title after going on a run as the No. 4 seed, taking down top-ranked and top-seeded West Liberty in double overtime in the process.

UVa-Wise is 2-4 against Concord since joining the MEC with the Cavs' last victory over the Mountain Lions taking place on March 1, 2014, in Athens (79-77, OT).

About UVa-Wise
UVa-Wise enters Thursday night's contest trying to halt a four-game skid and looking to rebound from a heartbreaking, 88-81 overtime loss at sixth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit Monday night.

Despite the Cavs being up by three after a made free throw from freshman forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea (Quibdó, Chocó, Colombia) with 5.1 seconds remaining in regulation, the Cardinals' Jarin Hilson drained a top of the key 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime. Wheeling Jesuit outscored UVa-Wise 14-7 in the OT period, including going on a 7-0 run over the first two minutes, to earn the victory. Redshirt sophomore forward Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) led all scorers with a game-high 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting from deep, his right-corner 3-pointer with 17 seconds to go in regulation giving the Cavs a 73-71 lead.

This past Saturday UVa-Wise was handed a 98-71 loss at fourth-ranked West Liberty.
