Cavs Down Bobcats For 11th Win of Season

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - Kristin Gobbi scored a game-high three goals while teammates Emily Henneberry, Catherina Dina, Taylor Lawton and McKayla Grasham added two goals each as UVa-Wise won its 11th game of the season 14-8 over West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday morning.

West Virginia Wesleyan (5-8, 2-3 MEC) took its only lead of the day early in the first half when Madison Duvall scored unassisted less than three minutes into the game.

The lead would be short lived for the Bobcats as Henneberry scored the first of four consecutive goals for UVa-Wise (11-3, 4-1) with 26:15 to play in the opening half.

Lawton, Gobbi and Hannah Marshall scored the three other goals during the spurt as the visitors took a 4-1 lead midway through the opening half.

Natalie Schaffner and Kim Lubic responded with a goal each for the Bobcats to make it a 4-3 game only to see the Cavaliers finish the half on a 5-0 run.

Grasham, Gobbi, Annie Hanson, Rachel Cole and Dina supplied the goals for Meghan Dennehy's squad as they took a 9-3 lead to halftime.

Dina and Lawton tacked on a goal each early in the second half to make it 11-3 in favor of UVa-Wise with under 25 minutes to play.

West Virginia Wesleyan then began a comeback bid. The Bobcats scored five of the next six goals to make it a 12-8 game with four minutes to play.

The Cavs would put the game away with a pair of goals in the final minute, one each by Gobbi and Henneberry.

The win assures UVa-Wise either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the upcoming Mountain East Conference Tournament.

Grasham tied for game-high groundball honors with four while also causing two turnovers. Marshall finished with two draw controls and two caused turnovers while Jessica Apgar picked up three groundballs in the road league win.

Schaffner led the Bobcats with four groundballs while Jadea Deahl added three groundballs and Caitlyn Baicar claimed a team-high three draw controls.

UVa-Wise finishes the 2016 regular season Saturday at Shepherd University. The winner of the game will become the No. 2 seed in the upcoming league tournament.
