Cavs Drop Falcons 12-9

WISE - - UVa-Wise insured a winning season in only the second year of the program with a 12-9 come from behind victory over Notre Dame College Sunday morning. The Cavaliers finished the game on a 4-0 scoring spurt as Hannah Marshall, Sydney Steinberg, Emily Henneberry and McKayla Grasham all scored to turn a 9-8 deficit to a 12-9 victory.

Notre Dame (5-5, 1-3 MEC) scored five of the game's first seven goals. Following a Marshall goal 23 seconds into the contest, the Falcons' Ashlee Boyoko and Darbie Barkman scored to take a 2-1 lead.

UVa-Wise's (9-2, 3-0 MEC) Sydney Steinberg tied the game with an unassisted goal at the 26:13 mark.

Victoria Martin scored to give Notre Dame the lead with 24:14 to play in the half before back-to-back goals by Brooke Czarnecki extended the lead to 5-2.

Henneberry's first goal of the game came at the 16:47 mark to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Falcons pushed their lead back to three when Barkman scored off a Victoria Martin pass.

Barkman's goal came at the 11:36 mark of the opening half, Notre Dame would be unable to score another goal until 26:08 was left to play.

The Cavs cut the lead to two when Taylor Lawton scored unassisted at the 4:19 mark. Minutes later, the complexity of the game changed.

Barkman seemingly scored Notre Dame's seventh goal of the game with 27 seconds remaining in the half but her goal was wiped away on a yellow card.

Playing a player up, UVa-Wise took advantage when Rachel Cole scored on a free position shot just before the horn sounded to send the game to intermission at 6-5.

Cole's goal would prove to be the second of four consecutive for the Cavaliers. Catherina Dina scored 19 seconds into the second half before Grasham scored at the 28:07 mark to give her club a 7-6 lead.

For the second time in the contest, Czarnecki scored back-to-back goals to put the Falcons up 8-7 with 22:35 to play.

The back-and-forth would continue as Dina would tie the game with 21:47 left before Czarnecki once again gave her club the lead with an unassisted goal at the 19:46 mark.

Czarnecki's goal would be the last of the day for Notre Dame as Marshall scored with 15:35 to play to start the game ending four-goal scoring spurt.

Defensively, Jessica Apgar picked up a game-high nine groundballs while Melanine Reilly added three groundballs and three saves in a winning effort.

Henneberry, Dina and Cole finished with three points each for UVa-Wise while Czarnecki's five goals was a game-high in a losing effort.

UVa-Wise will wrap up the home portion of its season Wednesday when Lincoln Memorial University visits Smith Stadium in a 7 p.m. first draw.
