Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – UVa-Wise men's basketball dropped a 77-59 decision to Glenville State Thursday night in Glenville, West Virginia. Despite outscoring the host Pioneers (8-13, 5-10 MEC) 32-22 in points in the paint, the visiting Cavaliers (3-18, 1-14 MEC) trailed for the entire game except when they tied the score up at 40-all in the second half.

UVa-Wise slightly out-shot Glenville State in the game, the Cavs shooting 39 percent (22-for-57) for the contest and the Pioneers going 23-for-63 on field goals (37 percent). UVa-Wise actually outscored Glenville State in second-chance points (16-11) but the Cavs committed a total of 17 turnovers that led to 17 points for the Pioneers.

In a slow, low-scoring battle it took the Cavs nearly six minutes to score a basket as Glenville State opened up the game with a commanding 10-0 start. UVa-Wise was forced to use an early 30-second timeout with 15:13 to go in the opening half before senior forward Matt Day (Buckhorn, Ky.) finally got points on the board for the Cavs with a layup at the 14:03 mark.

A free throw by Day cut down the Pioneers' lead to five at 16-11 with 11:38 to go in the half. Two shots from distance quickly gave the Pioneers a double-digit lead at 36-26 before sophomore guard Philip Owens II (Virginia Beach, Va.) made a layup to make it an eight-point game going into the break.

The Cavs shot 42 percent (11-for-26) in the opening half but were only 3-for-10 from beyond the arc. Glenville State shot 33 percent (12-for-36) in the opening 20 minutes of play and were 7-for-22 (32 percent) from outside. Nine turnovers and 11 offensive boards plagued the Cavs in the first half.

A 5-0 run to begin the second half forced a Glenville State timeout just two minutes into play. The Cavs continued their run to 12-4 and tied up the game at 40-40 with 14:22 remaining after a three-pointer by sophomore transfer guard Demarcus Edwards (Mount Vernon, Va.).

The Pioneers responded to the Cavs strong second-half start by going on a 10-0 run of their own to gain a 10-point 50-40 lead at the 11:39 mark.
