No. 18 West Liberty Hands Cavalier Women 86-65 Loss

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - - No. 18 West Liberty outscored visiting UVa-Wise 50-37 in the second half to complete season-series sweep of the Cavaliers, 86-65 at the ASRC Saturday.

Liz Flowers scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the opening quarter, including a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game to give West Liberty (21-3, 16-2 MEC) an 18-15 lead after the opening quarter.

UVa-Wise (10-12, 6-12 MEC) took its first lead of the day just 90 seconds into the second period when Kayla Carey scored off a Natalia Saar pass. Carey's bucket gave the Cavaliers a 20-18 lead. Kristin Kunzman's club would push the lead to as many as six as part of an 8-0 run.

Trailing 24-18, West Liberty closed the half on an 18-5 run as Brandi Beader and Johnie Olosky hit a pair of 3-pointers in the spurt.

The third period belonged to the 'Toppers. National assist leader Kailee Howe dished out three assists while scoring nine points in a quarter that saw West Liberty push its lead to as many as 13 points on three separate occasions.

The Cavs would be unable to get the game back within single digits at any point in the fourth quarter as the 'Toppers claimed their 21st win of the year.

West Liberty forward Kiera Simpson was a force as she grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked three shots in her 25 minutes of action.

Howe and Olosky each posted 14 points while Emily Bucon chipped in 13. Beader netted 10 points to round a group of five 'Toppers in double figure scoring.

Carey led UVa-Wise with 19 points and eight boards; Taylor Sandidge was the only other Cav to finish in double figure scoring, the guard registered 12 points.

The game concludes a four-game road trip for UVa-Wise. The team will return home to play three of its final four at the Prior Center, beginning Thursday when Notre Dame College visits for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
