Box Score WISE - - Concord University used an 11-0 run to break a 34-34 tie mid-way through the second half to post a 65-48 win over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center Saturday. The win secured the eighth seed in next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament for the Mountain Lions and secured a season-series sweep of the Cavaliers.
Concord's (8-20, 8-14) win sets up a third meeting between the two schools on Saturday and means the Mountain Lions must beat Kristin Kunzman's team three times to advance to the MEC Tournament Quarterfinals.
UVa-Wise (9-19, 8-14) struggled to get the ball in the basket for most of the day. The Cavaliers made just 9-31 shot attempts in the first half before finishing the game at 28.6 percent (18-63).
Despite the poor shooting, UVa-Wise tied the game at 34 on an inside bucket by Kayla Carey with 14:53 to play. It would be the last shot the team would make until Carey scored again at the 9:44 mark. The over five minute dry spell would prove to be too much to overcome as Concord spent the remainder of the contest inching away.
The Mountain Lions shot 45.6 percent from the floor and forced 16 turnovers in the game. The forced turnovers led to 19 points while the team limited the Cavaliers to 4-23 shooting from beyond the 3-point line.
Concord's Kylie Molisee finished the game 6-9 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds as she tied teammate Melea Smith for game-high point honors with 14. Jacqueline Kestner also registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Danielle Catron added 10 points and seven boards off the bench.
Taylor Sandidge was the only Cavalier to finish in double figures as she went 5-6 from the free throw line to score 10 points.
Senior Katie Jo Dockery posted nine points, seven rebounds, and three assists in her final home game.
Tuesday's opening round tournament game will tip at 7 p.m. from Athens, W.Va.
