Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - Alex Weakland scored a game-high 19 points while also leading all players in rebounds with 17 as she led Shepherd to a 74-63 Mountain East Conference victory over UVa-Wise at the Butcher Center Monday.
Shepherd (19-8, 16-5) opened the game on a 7-2 only to see the visitors respond with a 7-2 of their own moments later. The UVa-Wise spurt gave coach Kristin Kunzman's team a 13-11 lead with 11:49 to play in the first half.
UVa-Wise (9-18, 8-13) would hold the lead until Rachel Johnson's 3-pointer with 7:21 to play in the first half gave the Rams a 17-15 advantage. It would be the last time Shepherd would trail as the team would close the first half on a 17-7 run to take a 36-26 lead to intermission.
The Cavaliers would get as close as seven points on two separate occasions in the second half but would be unable to get any closer as the Rams limited the visitors to 15.4 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point line in the contest.
Weakland scored 11 points and tallied eight boards in the final 20 minutes as she finished 4-5 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from the foul line in the second half. For the game, Weakland was 7-13 from the field and collected 16 of her 17 rebounds on the defensive end.
Three other players finished in double figure scoring for the Rams, Cara Mason scored 15 points and Gabby Flinchum and Johnson each netted 13.
Kayla Carey scored 18 points in defeat and teammate Blair Harding posted 10.
The loss means UVa-Wise must defeat Concord on Senior Day Saturday to play its opening round Mountain East Conference Tournament contest at the Prior Center. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
