Cavalier Men Pull Off The 77-75 Upset Over The Golden Eagles

Box Score CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Coach Mellinger's squad pulled off the 77-75 upset against the University of Charleston on Saturday at the Eddie King Gymnasium.
UVa-Wise (2-22, 1-18 MEC) let six minutes run off the clock before scoring its first points, but still managed a 38-34 lead at the half.  
The biggest lead in the second half for the Cavaliers came when a 3-pointer from Oliver Thompson put UVa-Wise up by 10.
The Golden Eagles (16-9, 11-8 MEC) would lead by five before Brian Sydnor would hit on two of his four 3-pointers to tie the game for the final time with 52 seconds remaining in the game.
With less than a minute to go, UVa-Wise would go on to hit seven out of nine free throws to win the game.
Syndor would finish the game with a game-high 23 points and three steals, and Charles George added 20 points and seven assists, while Matt Day finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise shot 50.9 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from beyond the arc, and was able to overcome being out-rebounded 46-24 in the victory.
Charleston had four players finish in double figures. Tino Ditrapano finished with a team-high 15 points and six rebounds, and Octavius Green added 13 points and nine rebounds. Chris Evans and Vincent Dillard both contributed to the 31 points scored from off the bench.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday at Shepherdstown, West Virginia against Shepherd University.
