WISE, Va. -  The second half comeback for UVa-Wise was not enough in the 89-83 loss to West Virginia State on Thursday at the Prior Center. The Cavaliers outscored the Yellow Jackets 47-43 in the second half in the loss, but could not overcome a 10-point first half deficit.

Charles George led the way for UVa-Wise (1-22, 0-18 MEC) with a season-high 24 points and a career-high eight assists. Philip Owens II finished with 17 points and five assists, Matt Day added 13 points and eight rebounds and Tyler Maggard finished with 12 points.

Markee Mazyck went 16-18 from the free throw line to finish with a game-high 34 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (4-21, 4-12 MEC). Dominic Phillips added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Damion Harris finished 14 points.

West Virginia State out-rebounded UVa-Wise 45-27, and shot 80 percent from the free throw line compared to 54.2 percent from the Cavaliers.

UVa-Wise will be back in action Saturday against the University of Charleston at 4.
