Cavs Use Long Ball to Upend No. 14 King

WISE - - Matt Day, Camryn Fort and Philip Owens II hit four 3-pointers each to lead a UVa-Wise attack that hit a school record 18 triples in a 100-87 win over No. 14 King University Sunday.

UVa-Wise (2-8) hit 14 of its 18 long-distance shots in the first 20 minutes as coach Blake Mellinger's squad built a 54-46 lead at intermission.

Despite the fast start by the Cavaliers, King (8-2) was shooting the three-ball at an incredible clip as well. A 3-pointer by CJ Good gave the Tornado a 17-14 with 15:22 to go in the first half.

The two teams combined to hit 21 shots from behind the arc in the half. Day scored 14 points in the half while all four of Owens' 3-point makes came in the first half for 12 points; Fort was a perfect 3-3 from the field for 11 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Playing against King's full-court press, UVa-Wise committed just six turnovers in the half while handing out 16 assists as a team. Ricardo Hill Jr. handed out six of the assists.

Good led King with 13 points in the half as 12 Tornado appeared in the half. King made 41.5 percent of its shots from the field and 31.8 percent of its attempts from the three-point line. UVa-Wise hit on 14 of 24 3-point attempts in the half while making 56.3 percent of its field goal attempts.

The Cavs maintained the lead until 13:27 to play when Derick Pope grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in. Pope's bucket gave George Pitts' club a 67-66 lead.

Two possessions later, UVa-Wise regained the lead on a 3-point basket by Fort. The Cavs would build the lead to 74-67 when Fort scored inside and was fouled at the 10:45 mark.

King would get no closer than five points over the remainder of the contest. A Mack Owens triple with 2:10 remaining made the score 92-87 but Day responded with a pair of free throws to stretch the lead back out.

In total, the Cavs connected on 22 of 28 foul shots in the game, including 18 of 23 in the second half.

Day led all players with 28 points and 19 rebounds. Fort scored a career-high 23 points while Dimitri Sousa added 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Owens poured in 14 points with eight assists.

Coach Blake Mellinger's Cavs won the battle of the boards 47-42 and limited the Tornado to 39.8 percent shooting for the game.

Good scored a team-high 23 points while Pope added 16. Hunter LeVeau made four 3-pointers en route to 15 points. LeVeau was ejected late in the second half when he picked up his second technical foul. Four technical fouls were assessed in the game, three of which were called on the Tornado.

Owens, 11 and Mikquell Jackson, 10 rounded out the double-figure scoring for King.

The victory by the Cavalier men completed a sweep for UVa-Wise. The Cavalier women knocked of the Tornado women 72-67 earlier in the day.

Next up for UVa-Wise is a trip to Fairmont State on Jan. 4th.
