Box Score WISE - - Glenville State closed out the first half on a 7-1 run and limited UVa-Wise to just 29 percent shooting in claiming a 63-54 Mountain East Conference victory at the Prior Center Thursday night.
Glenville State (9-8, 7-6) built a 35-26 halftime lead in large part due to their half-ending run and seven made 3-pointers. Coach Charles Marshall's Pioneers played 15 players in the half and had nine of the players dent the scoreboard.
UVa-Wise's (6-13, 5-8) Kayla Carey kept her club in the game by scoring nine points and collecting nine boards in the half. The Cavaliers allowed several opportunities to slip through their fingertips as the team connected on just three of 11 free throw attempts in the first 20 minutes.
Glenville State would run its lead to 17 on two separate occasions in the second half only to see UVa-Wise cut the lead to seven with 7:16 remaining. Katie Jo Dockery's 3-pointer capped a quick 5-0 run that allowed Kristin Kunzman's squad to keep hope alive.
The Pioneers responded with back-to-back buckets to run the lead back to double digits and end the Cavalier threat. UVa-Wise would receive a pair of late baskets by Allison Ball before the visitors made free throws late to salt the game away.
Glenville State's Keyanna Tate led all players with 17 points, she added 13 rebounds to record a double-double in 23 minutes of play. Briana Smythe came off the bench to make seven of 10 field goal attempts to score 14 points.
Carey led the Cavaliers with 14 points and 15 rebounds while Ball scored a career-high 13 points and Blair Harding netted 12 points in defeat.
UVa-Wise will be back in action on Saturday when the team tries for a season series sweep over Urbana. Tip is set for 2 pm from the Prior Center.
