Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan used a 20-5 run late in the second half to post a 74-59 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday.
West Virginia Wesleyan (8-10, 6-6) opened up a 32-15 lead at halftime by limiting UVa-Wise to just six made field goals. The misses for the Cavaliers allowed Tanner McGrew to nearly record a first half double-double for the Bobcats, he tallied 11 points and nine boards in the first period.
UVa-Wise (1-16, 0-11) would get as close as eight points on two separate occasions but the big Wesleyan run would end any hope the visitors had of victory.
Philip Owens II led the way for UVa-Wise with 17 points, six assists and three steals. Brian Sydnor finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Matt Day added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block for the Cavaliers.
The Bobcats limited second chance opportunities for the Cavaliers as the visitors grabbed only four offensive rebounds. Overall, Wesleyan out-rebounded UVa-Wise 35-23.
McGrew finished with a game-high 21 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Chris Dewberry added 15 points, while Garrett Grantham finished with 13 points and Taylor Price added 10 points for Wesleyan.
The Bobcats took advantage of their chances at the free throw line by making 23-25 attempts.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday against Glenville State at the Prior Center.
