Box Score WISE - - Visiting Shepherd University held UVa-Wise scoreless for over six minutes in the second half to post a 71-55 Mountain East Conference victory at the Prior Center Saturday afternoon.
Shepherd (10-4, 7-1) built a 34-27 halftime advantage using its defense. The Cavaliers made just 11 of 28 field goal attempts in the half, five of which came from Kayla Carey who scored 13 points in the first 20 minutes.
UVa-Wise (5-9, 4-4) would open the second half on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 38. In the run, Katie Jo Dockery, Blair Harding, and Taylor Sandidge all made baskets.
The Rams responded with a 18-8 run to put the game out of reach at 58-48. Overall, Shepherd shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the second half while limiting UVa-Wise to 10-35 shooting in the final 20 minutes.
Cara Mason and Morgan Arden each scored 16 points to lead Shepherd. Carey and Sandidge each netted 15 points in the loss for UVa-Wise.
The Cavaliers will be back in action on Monday when Fairmont State visits the Prior Center for a 5:30 pm tip.
