CHARLESTON, W.Va. - - Second seeded West Liberty University opened the game on a 9-0 run and never trailed en route to an 82-57 victory over UVa-Wise in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Go Mart Mountain East Conference Tournament.
West Liberty (20-9) hit 10 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and built a 43-30 lead at intermission as Colleen McCormick banked in a 3-pointer just before the first half buzzer. As a team, the Hilltoppers shot 62.5 percent from distance in the first half.
Jenn Mohney joined McCormick in double-figure scoring off the bench as she hit four 3-pointers en route to 12 first half points; McCormick hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 first half points. Overall, the Hilltopper bench outscored the Cavalier bench 23-6 in the half.
UVa-Wise (10-18) used the inside scoring of Reynesha Archer to keep the game within reach. The senior finished the first half with 13 points on 5-11 shooting.
West Liberty would make its first three 3-point attempts of the second half to put the game out of reach. The 'Toppers would open the half with a 17-6 run to stretch the lead to 60-36 with 13:46 to play.
UVa-Wise would be unable to get the score back to single digits after the run as West Liberty built its lead to as much as 30 points in the second half.
Archer finished the game with a game-high 22 points, no other Cavalier cracked double-figures in the loss.
All-Conference guard Liz Flowers led West Liberty with 18 points while Mohney added 17 points and McCormick finished with 15.
The 'Toppers finished the game 14-28 from beyond the arc and shot 49.2 percent from the floor overall. West Liberty advances to the semifinals of the Go Mart MEC Tournament on Saturday.
