ATHENS, W.Va. - - Five Cavaliers scored in double-figures led by Javon Moore's game-high 19 points as UVa-Wise completed its regular season with a 79-77 overtime win over Concord on Saturday. With the win, the Cavs claimed a season series sweep over the Mountain Lions. UVa-Wise posted a 71-68 win over Concord at the Prior Center in January.
UVa-Wise (11-15, 8-14 MEC) opened the game on a 10-5 run as Matt Day, Javon Moore, and James Turner all dented the scoring column in the opening four minutes of play.
Concord (8-20, 5-17 MEC) responded and tied the game at 17 with 12:42 to play in the opening half on a 3-pointer by Ali Barnes. The Mountain Lions would eventually forge a 29-22 lead as Barnes capped a 9-2 run with a fast break layup.
The Cavs answered with an 11-3 run to go to the locker room up 33-32. Tyler Maggard scored five of his 11 points in the 11-3 run as he connected on a 3-pointer and sank a pair of foul shots.
The lead would change six times in the first five minutes of the second half before Day drilled a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 50-44 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining. Concord quickly responded with a pair of triples, one each from Grant Dickinson and Cam Shannon to knot the game at 50 with 11:36 left.
Neither team would be able to build more than a four point lead for the rest of regulation. UVa-Wise went to the final minute holding a 69-67 lead after Deon Boyce split a pair of free throws.
The Mountain Lions would miss a layup on the next possession only to get the ball back down two with nine seconds to play after a Cavalier turnover.
Concord capitalized on the opportunity as Mike Boyd was fouled with two seconds to play; Boyd went to the line and made both charity shots to send the game to overtime tied at 69.
In the extra five minutes, the momentum for the Mountain Lions continued as the host scored the first six points to gain a 75-69 advantage with 2:29 to play. Moore then scored six points of a 7-0 UVa-Wise run to give the visitors back the lead at 76-75 with 45 ticks showing on the clock.
Barnes would can two free throws on Concord's next possession only to see Moore answer with another bucket to give UVa-Wise a 78-77 lead. The Mountain Lions' Aaron Miller would attempt to give his club the lead back on a jumper with four seconds to play but his shot was no good and the rebound was gained by Boyce. Boyce was immediately fouled and he made one of two foul shots to keep hope alive for Concord. Boyd would fire up a jumper at the buzzer in hopes of sending the game to a second extra session but the shot was no good giving the Cavs the win.
Overall, Saturday's contest featured 11 ties and 18 lead changes, including three lead changes in the final minute.
Boyce finished the game with 15 points and 14 boards while Day added 15 points. Charles George netted 11 points, four rebounds and three assists in the road win.
Concord's Terry Hopwell finished 7-12 from the floor for a team-high 18 points while Miller (13) and Barnes (12) combined to score 25 points off the bench.
UVa-Wise will travel to Wheeling Jesuit University on Tuesday for the opening round of the 2014 Mountain East Conference Tournament.
