Charleston Slips by UVa-Wise

WISE - - Fred Simpson poured in 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench as the University of Charleston recorded a 72-71 victory over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center on Saturday.  Simpson's 15 points were part of a 17-0 advantage the Golden Eagles posted in bench points as the Cavaliers played their bench just a combined 31 minutes in the loss.

Charleston (15-7, 12-6 MEC) overcame an eight point deficit with 10:37 to play as the visitors shot 56 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes.  Tino diTrapano scored a team-high 16 points for the Eagles while Aleksander Kesic and Denzel Douglas each netted 14 points as five players scored in double-figures.

The Eagles recorded the final lead change of the game when Denzel Douglas sank a pair of free throws with 14 seconds to go.  After a UVa-Wise turnover, diTrapano made a fast break layup to give Charleston a 72-69 lead.  The Eagles then elected to foul Charles George with just four seconds to play.  George made the first shot and attempted to miss the second shot but, it was banked in.  Charleston then proceeded to inbound the ball and run out the clock to secure the season series sweep.

UVa-Wise (9-13, 6-12 MEC) received a game-high 23 points from Javon Moore while Deon Boyce recorded his 18th double-double of the season with 17 points and 16 rebounds. James Turner added 13 points and Matt Day chipped in 12 in the loss.

Three UVa-Wise starters fouled out in the contest, including Boyce in the game's final minutes.

The Cavs are back in action on Thursday when Shepherd visits the Prior Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
