Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - Glenville State overcame career days by Kayla Carey and Katie Jo Dockery to post a 94-81 victory over UVa-Wise at the Waco Center on Saturday. Keyanna Tate scored 30 points to lead the way for the Pioneers who forced 30 Cavalier turnovers in improving to 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference.
UVa-Wise (3-4, 3-1 MEC) scored the first 11 points of the game as Glenville State missed its first eight shot attempts. It would be a lead the Cavs would hold until 7:22 to play in the opening half when Angenay Williams would score inside to give the Pioneers a 28-27 lead.
Glenville State (2-3, 2-2 MEC) and UVa-Wise would swap the lead four more times the remainder of the first half before the Pioneers took a 47-45 lead to the break.
The Cavs opened the second half in similar fashion to how they started the first half by taking the lead and building a three-point advantage at 56-53 five minutes in to the final 20 minutes. The defending MEC champions responded with a 12-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish.
A jumper by Dockery with 11:36 cut the Glenville State lead to 65-58. The Cavs would draw to as close as five points with 9:02 to play after a pair of Kehanna Grayer foul shots but it would be as close as the visitors could get.
A quick 6-0 run, all by Tate would give the Pioneers a 77-66 lead with 8:10 to go. Coach Charles Marshall's club would keep UVa-Wise at distance the remainder of the game to score the victory.
Carey finished with career highs in both points and rebounds as she scored 23 points and grabbed 20 boards. Dockery posted a career-high 22 points.
The game featured 147 field goal attempts, 59 foul shots, and 50 fouls. UVa-Wise will be back in action next Saturday when the team visits West Virginia Tech for a non-conference battle.
