Box Score WISE - - The University of Pikeville limited UVa-Wise to 19 second half points and overcame a 34-29 halftime deficit to post a 63-53 victory at the Prior Center on Wednesday. With the win, the Bears sweep the season series over the Cavaliers, UPike won 93-70 in Pikeville earlier this season.
UVa-Wise (4-5) opened the game on a 9-3 run and led by as many as eight points in the opening half as UPike missed its first six shots of the contest. The Bears battled back with an 8-2 run to cut a 19-11 deficit to 21-19 with 5:40 to play in the half.
UPike would eventually tie the game at 25-25 with 2:16 to play on a Apolonia Thomas jumper. UVa-Wise would finish the half by outscoring the visitors 9-4 to take the 34-29 halftime lead.
Coach Kristin Kunzman's squad would maintain its lead until 16:43 to play when the Bears would take their first lead of the game as Jamie Castle picked off an errant pass and raced the length of the floor for a layup to give her club a 37-36 lead.
An Allison Ball bucket would give the Cavs the lead back at 38-37 with 15 minutes to play before the Bears would take the lead for good on a Castle basket with 13:46 remaining.
UPike would lead by as many as 12 points in the second half as UVa-Wise made just 6-31 shot attempts in the second half. The Bears also forced nine second half turnovers and out-rebounded the Cavs 23-19 in the final 20 minutes after losing the battle of the boards 24-16 in the first half.
UVa-Wise's Taylor Sandidge led all players with 14 points while teammate Kehana Grayer recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Shekinah Gibson led the Bears with 14 points while Khalilah Quigley scored 13 points and Kelah Eldridge scored 11 points.
UPike rallied to shoot 41 percent from the floor after the slow start in claiming its first season sweep over UVa-Wise since the 2008-09 campaign.
UVa-Wise will be back in action on Saturday when the team visits King University for a 5 pm tip.
