UPike Stops UVa-Wise Winning Streak

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - - Khalilah Quigley and Kelah Eldridge each scored 20 points as host University of Pikeville stopped a three-game losing streak to UVa-Wise with a 93-70 win at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center on Saturday.  The Bears controlled the paint in the victory by scoring 58 points inside and winning the battle of the boards 51-32.

UPike (7-2) used a 9-0 run mid-way through the first half to take a 19-10 lead.  The Bears would lead by as many as 17 points in the first 20 minutes as Shekinah Gibson scored 12 points and corralled seven rebounds in the opening half.

UVa-Wise (2-3) would get to within 13 at intermission as Blair Harding stole the ball from Jamie Castle and scored before the first half horn.  The Cavs shot just 31.4 percent from the field in the opening half while being out-rebounded 26-14.

Coach Kristin Kunzman's squad would battle back in the early moments of the second half.  Taylor Sandidge would score five points of a 7-0 run to get the visitors to within eight points with 15:15 remaining.

It would be as close as UVa-Wise would get over the remainder of the contest as UPike responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to double digits.  The Bears would lead by as many as 28 points in the second half as the team halted a three-game skid to the Cavs.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for UVa-Wise who was playing its fifth consecutive road game to start the season.

Kehana Grayer scored a season-high 13 points in the loss while Harding scored a team-high 18 points.  The Cavs collected 13 steals and forced 23 turnovers by the Bears but could only turn the miscues in to 17 points.

Gibson finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine boards while Kandice Porter chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds for the victorious Bears.

UVa-Wise will play its home opener on Thursday when West Virginia Wesleyan visits the Prior Center for a Mountain East Conference contest.
