WISE - - Concord University built a 34-21 halftime lead and held off a late UVa-Wise rally in a 73-66 win at the Prior Center on Thursday. The victorious Mountain Lions placed four players in double-figure scoring led by Sissy Wagner's 16 point-nine assist performance.
Concord (8-6, 6-5 MEC) shot 45.8 percent from the field in the opening half and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc in building the 13 point margin.
UVa-Wise (7-8, 3-8 MEC) would fall behind by as many as 20 points with 4:01 remaining before going on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to nine with 1:20 to play. Coach Kristin Kunzman's club would eventually cut the deficit to as few as seven with 15 seconds to play on a 3-point play by Taylor Sandidge. The comeback effort would eventually run out of time as the Mountain Lions claimed the win.
Sandidge had a game-high 18 points in the loss and Makenzie Cluesman and Reynesha Archer each scored 11 points.
Jacqueline Kestner had 15 points and five rebounds for Concord while Rachel Atrip chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Cavaliers will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday when West Virginia Wesleyan visits the Prior Center for a 2 p.m. tip.
