Kayla Carey Scores Career-High 19 Points but Cavaliers Fall at Charleston

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - -  University of Charleston limited UVa-Wise to 31 percent shooting to post a 68-52 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory on Saturday.  Monet Saunders turned in a double-double performance in the win as she scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Charleston (10-4, 6-4 MEC) built a 34-20 halftime lead by holding UVa-Wise (7-7, 3-7 MEC) to just 25 percent shooting from the field while connecting on 40.7 percent of its shots.  LeAnne Ross scored 10 points in the half as she was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.  The Cavaliers were able to stay in range by out-rebounding the Golden Eagles 22-18 in the half.  Coach Kristin Kunzman's club did a good job of getting second opportunities as well by collecting 10 offensive rebounds.

The Cavaliers mounted a comeback in the second half cutting the lead to as few as nine points with 12:04 to play when Reynesha Archer drained a 3-pointer.  It would be the last time UVa-Wise would have the lead to single digits as Charleston would go on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Kayla scored a career-high 19 points in the loss while Makenzie Cluesman added 11 points and eight rebounds.

UVa-Wise will return to action on Thursday when the team plays host to Concord University.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Prior Center.
