FAIRMONT, W.Va. - - Charles George scored a team-high 20 points and Deon Boyce recorded his 11th double-double of the season as UVa-Wise stopped a three-game losing streak with an 82-77 win over Fairmont State on Monday.
UVa-Wise (7-6, 4-5 MEC) jumped out to a 41-31 halftime lead as George scored 13 points and the team forced 11 Fairmont State (10-4, 5-3 MEC) turnovers. The key run of the half occurred mid-way through the period when the Cavalier backcourt went on a 7-0 run to give the visitors a 20-12 lead. George, Jordan Smith, and Brian Sydnor all scored in the run.Â
Coach Blake Mellinger's team would not trail again in the game as the Cavs led by as many as 11 points in the second half. The Falcons would go on a late run to cut the lead to three with 28 seconds to play but, free throws by James Turner and Boyce sealed the road victory.
Boyce's double-double performance was highlighted by his 400th career rebound in just his 29th career game. Â The Pittsburgh native also handed out five assists and finished with two steals in the contest.
Matt Day added 17 points and nine rebounds while Javon Moore scored 12 points in a foul plagued night.
The Falcons received a game-high 23 points from Stevie Browning and Martins Abele had 12 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
UVa-Wise will return to play on Saturday when the team travels to Charleston for another Mountain East Conference road game. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
