SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise outscored Shepherd University 43-21 in the second half and Makenzie Hensley recorded her first collegiate double-double as the Cavaliers knocked off the Rams 73-58 at the Butcher Athletic Center on Saturday. The 43-21 run was highlighted by a 27-2 run over the first 11:59 of the second half. The run started with the Cavs trailing by 10 and ended with the team up 15.
Shepherd (2-10, 2-6 MEC) opened the first half on a 10-0 run and forced UVa-Wise to play catch up through the remainder of the half. The Cavaliers' Makenzie Hensley kept her club in the game as she poured in 11 points and five rebounds in just five minutes of play off the bench. Hensley's strong play along with UVa-Wise holding a 27-22 advantage on the glass allowed the visitors to go to intermission down 37-30. Another key in the opening half was the ability of Kristin Kunzman's club to get Shepherd leading scorer and rebounder Gabby Flinchum in foul trouble. Flinchum picked up three fouls in a half that saw her score eight points and grab five rebounds.
UVa-Wise (7-5, 3-5 MEC) took its first lead of the game with 17:03 to play in the game when Katie Jo Lester drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the visitors a 40-37 lead. In total, UVa-Wise would go on a 13-0 run to start the half and take a six point lead. Following a made bucket by the Rams, Flinchum picked up her fourth foul of the game with over 16 minutes to play. The absence of Flinchum and hot shooting allowed the Cavs to go on a 27-2 run to put the game away. When Flinchum returned to the game with 5:26 to play her club trailed by 16 points.
Shepherd was never able to recover as UVa-Wise cruised to the 73-58 victory. The win stopped a four-game losing streak for the Cavs who put seven players into the scoring column. Makenzie Cluesman scored a game-high 23 points while also grabbing eight rebounds and handing out five assists and teammate Katie Jo Lester scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting.
Flinchum joined Hensley as the only other player to record a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Johnson and Jimyse Brown added 10 points each for the Rams.
