WISE - - UVa-Wise overcame a 12 point second-half deficit to post a 74-70 Mountain East Conference win over Notre Dame College on Monday. Matt Day scored 17 points and grabbed and a career-high 13 rebounds in the victory while Javon Moore nearly recorded a triple-double as he finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.
Notre Dame (1-4, 1-1 MEC) out-scored UVa-Wise (4-0, 2-0 MEC) 19-12 over the final seven minutes of the first-half to take a 33-26 lead to intermission. The Falcons limited the Cavaliers to 23.7 percent (9-38) shooting in the first half while draining six threes en route to the lead. Lawrence DeArmond scored 11 of his 21 points in the half while Tyree Gaiter made two 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the half. UVa-Wise stayed in the game by forcing 10 turnovers and out-rebounding Notre Dame 28-21 in the period.
The Falcons extended the advantage to 12 points with 14:29 in the game on a 3-point basket by Jarvis Huntley. The bucket capped an 8-0 run to give the visitors a 48-36 lead. From there, the Cavs would battle back with a 15-4 run to cut the lead to 52-51. In the stretch, Day scored seven points, a 3-pointer by Day finished off the scoring run.
Despite the run, Notre Dame maintained the lead until the 5:48 mark when Day made back-to-back free throws to give UVa-Wise a 60-59 lead. The Falcons regained the lead on a jumper by DeArmond to make the score 64-63 with 4:18 to play. One possession later, another DeArmond jumper extended the lead to three.
The second DeArmond jumper forced a timeout by the Cavaliers and spurred the winning scoring run. Day made a jumper out of the timeout to cut the lead to one and following an empty possession by the Falcons, Charles George went coast-to-coast to give the Cavs a 67-66 lead with 3:02 remaining.
UVa-Wise would not trail again as the team went on a 6-0 run to gain a 73-66 lead as Moore scored before George scored on a floater from the left side. Notre Dame would cut the lead to three on a basket by Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson with 23 ticks to play. Moore would split a pair of free throws to give the host a 74-70 lead to put the contest away.
George tied Moore with a team-high 22 points; the point guard turned the ball over just once for the second consecutive game. Boyce recorded 12 rebounds, the fourth consecutive double digit rebound performance for the senior. As a team, the Cavs out-rebounded the Falcons 51-39.
Notre Dame received a game-high 23 points from Huntley in addition to DeArmond's 21 points. Gaiter added 12 points and Figueroa-Jackson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The contest featured 50 total fouls and 60 combined free throws.
UVa-Wise will return to play on December 5th when the team plays its first MEC road contest at West Virginia Wesleyan.
