Deon Boyce posted his second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds as UVa-Wise won its home opener 64-58 over Virginia University-Lynchburg on Wednesday.
The Cavaliers (2-0) opened the game on an 8-2 run in the first six minutes of the contest only to see the Dragons (3-6) rebound to gain a 13-12 lead with nine minutes to play in the half. Lynchburg would maintain its lead until 3:33 to go in the half when
Javon Moore scored on a fast break after a steal by Boyce to give the host a 24-22 lead.Â
The Cavs would not trail again in the contest as the team would finish the half on a 15-6 run to take a 35-28 lead to the locker room.Â
UVa-Wise would continue its strong play in the early moments of the second half as the team went on a 13-7 run to jump in front 48-35 with 14:32 to play in the game. Lynchburg again would battle back, this time cutting the deficit to as low as five points with 24 seconds to play. The Dragons comeback attempt would fall short with 11 seconds to play when Jay Mcphaul had a 3-point attempt rim out, a made 3-pointer would have cut the deficit to three.Â
Lynchburg's Chris Calvin came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. As a team, the Dragons out-rebounded the Cavs 42-41 while also limiting the host to 12 percent (3-25) shooting from beyond the arc.
Charles George added 14 points and four assists for UVa-Wise while Moore scored six points, grabbed five rebounds, and handed out a game-high eight assists.
The Cavs will play the first Mountain East Conference game in school history on Saturday when Urbana University visits the Prior Center for a 4 pm tip.
