Matt Day claimed the Men’s Cavalier of the Month award after scoring 208 total points in the month of February with an average of 26 points per game and 12 rebounds per contest. The Buckhorn, Kentucky (Buckhorn H.S.), product shot 83 percent from the free-throw line as he made 60 foul shots in eight games played.
The forward most was named All-MEC Second Team after averaging 22.5 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per contest this season. Day scored a total of 629 points in 28 games this year and accumulated 303 total rebounds. With 19 points recorded this past Saturday at Concord University, Day moved into sixth place on UVa-Wise’s all-time scoring list. Matt has amassed 1,598 points in his career at the College and has nearly doubled his scoring average from his junior to senior seasons.
Day was named MEC Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, Feb. 29, after scoring a conference and UVa-Wise single-game record 49 points in the Cavs 102-89 home win over West Virginia State last Thursday. In that contest, Day hit 24 of 27 free throws for both a MEC and school record in foul shot makes and attempts.
The senior has registered a remarkable 16 double-doubles this season, which is eighth-most nationally and second-best in the MEC. Day has produced a double-double in five-straight games and has scored in double figures for 17-consecutive contests. Matt has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.
