BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - - Kenny Ball and Jared Finch combined to toss a one-hitter and the Cavaliers scored with the help of an error in the third inning en route to a 1-0 Mountain East Conference win over Fairmont State on Sunday. The game was the only game played as part of what was scheduled to be a four-game weekend slate. Game two of Sunday's doubleheader was halted due to snow and the field was unplayable on Friday and Saturday.
UVa-Wise (4-10, 3-6 MEC) collected just five hits as Fairmont State (1-12, 1-8 MEC) starter Ryan Fenwick fanned seven in his complete game effort. Ball did not allow a hit in his five innings of work while striking out one and walking out two. Finch came in out of the bullpen to record the save with two innings of work that saw him allow one hit and strike out two without allowing a walk.
Drew Hetzel produced the only hit for the Falcons in the sixth inning when he led off the frame with a base hit to left. Fairmont State would be unable to score Hetzel as Finch stranded him at third when he fanned Phil Longnecker to end the threat.
The Cavs will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to King University for a non-conference nine inning contest.
